However a lot has changed – also my understanding has changed and so it’s time for another post about this. I’m also going to take a crack at making a video showing how to flash a sonoff switch with Tasmota. Home Assistant has been in ‘beta’ for as long as it has been generally available and it seems it is soon to be going to be released as a real ‘product’ if chat on the support chat forum on discord is to be believed. Home Assistant recently changed the way releases are handled so as to release more stable .0 releases than has sometimes been the case and the accompanying up to 6 ‘dot’ releases to fix errors introduced in the new release.

The main reason for yet another post is that the latest version 6.4.x firmware for Tasmota has changed the way it interacts with Home Assistant MQTT Discovery and there are also some other gotchas with the Arduino Core version used. OK I’ll stop talking jargon real soon I promise and hopefully that will make everything more clear. This tutorial covers the ways to integrate a Sonoff S22 switch into Home Assistant using Sonoff MQTT and flashing Tasmota to replace the supplied Sonoff firmware. I’m going to cover two different methods to get the switch working in Home Assistant. The first just uses the S22 as it comes out-of-the-box. The second requires flashing Tasmota onto the switch and setting up MQTT in Home Assistant. Honestly sometimes it seems MQTT is build up as the greatest thing and it is useful however depending on what you want to achievt, it’s not necessarily the best option.
